How the A-series paper sizes work

The A-series follows a simple pattern: each size is half the area of the one before it. Fold an A3 sheet in half and you have two A4-sized sections. Fold A4 in half and you have two A5-sized sections.

The larger the number after “A”, the smaller the sheet. All A-series sizes keep the same proportions, which makes it possible to scale a document between sizes without changing its shape.

Common uses for each paper size

A0 — 841 × 1189 mm

A0 is the largest standard A-series size. It is commonly used for large technical drawings, architectural plans, posters and display graphics.

A1 — 594 × 841 mm

A1 is suitable for plans, maps, diagrams, flip charts and large posters where the content needs to be visible from a distance.

A2 — 420 × 594 mm

A2 is often used for medium-sized posters, artwork, calendars and detailed diagrams.

A3 — 297 × 420 mm

A3 gives you twice the area of A4. It is useful for spreadsheets, drawings, presentations, charts and layouts that need more room. An A3 sheet can also be folded in half to make an A4-sized booklet or brochure.

A4 — 210 × 297 mm

A4 is the everyday office paper size in Australia. Use it for letters, reports, forms, invoices, schoolwork and general printer paper.

A5 — 148 × 210 mm

A5 is half the size of A4. It is commonly used for notebooks, diaries, flyers, invitations and compact booklets.

A6 — 105 × 148 mm

A6 is a small format often used for postcards, greeting cards, invitations and pocket-sized booklets.

A7 to A10 — small-format paper

The smaller A-series sizes are useful for compact printed items. Depending on the design and production method, they may suit tickets, labels, coupons, tags or small inserts. Check the finished dimensions and printer or print supplier requirements before preparing artwork.

Choosing the right paper size

  • For everyday office documents: A4 is the usual choice.
  • For larger documents or visuals: Consider A3 for plans, charts, diagrams or presentations.
  • For compact reading or handouts: A5 works well for booklets, flyers and notebooks.
  • For cards and small printed pieces: A6 and smaller sizes may suit postcards, tickets or labels.
  • For printing: Check that your printer supports the size and paper weight you want to use. For commercial print, confirm artwork dimensions, bleed and finishing requirements with your print supplier.
